This question depends upon whether or not your son has any prior felony convictions. Trafficking in stolen property may be charged as either a class 3 or a class 2 felony depending upon the degree. If your son does not have any prior convictions and he is charged with a class 3 felony, his offense carries a maximum sentence of 8.75 years in the department of corrections. If he has no prior felony convictions and he is charged with a class 2 felony, his offense carries a maximum sentence of 12.5 years in the department of corrections. However, if your son had no prior felony convictions, he is probation eligible. If given probation, he may be ordered to serve up to one year in the county jail as a term of probation. Based upon the information provided, I recommend that you retain private counsel as soon as possible. Best of luck.
