An arraignment is the time when the judge will formally read the defendant his or her charges. The acceptance of the plea is the time when the defendant accepts a plea offer or bargain from the state in exchange for his or her guilty plea. The sentencing hearing is the time when the defendant receives his or her punishment for the charges he or she has just admitted to or been convicted of at trial.
